About Maine Historical Society

Founded in 1822, the Maine Historical Society is the third oldest historical society in the United States. Located in Portland's downtown arts district, MHS maintains a museum with rotating exhibits, an incomparable research library, and statewide educational resources.
We also provide guided tours of the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, boyhood home to the renowned poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, for individuals and groups.
The Maine Historical Society's purpose is to honor, preserve, and animate the rich history of Maine through exhibitions, tours, films, lectures, research, trips, and events. MHS is a place for all ages and is a private, not-for-profit organization.
