Designing the Maine Landscape

Maine's rich heritage of designed landscapes is rooted in the talents of groundbreaking landscape architects who saw the state's natural beauty as a muse guiding their work rather than merely as ground to be manipulated. Numerous public and private landscapes benefited from this design approach, which were carried out by Frederick Law Olmstead Sr. and his sons, Beatrix Farrand, Fletcher Steele and others. Drawn from a ten year survey of Maine's historic designed landscapes conducted by the Maine Olmstead Alliance for Parks and Landscapes and the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, this book showcases those landscapes.
